Ambrosia Jones reviewed one of my perfumes – African Dawn – eau de Parfum.
The first thing that struck me when I applied it to my wrist, is how incredibly sweet it is! Sweet is not a note you find often in Natural perfumery, let alone from a perfume with a heavy dose of resins in the base. And African Dawn is sweet as honey. It has a flower nectar sweetness to it that is quite fascinating, revolving around things like Butterfly bush and Cape May with the more commonly known Rose and jasmine absolutes supporting the scent in the background….After this first sweet hit, you get a lovely spicy warmth, as the combination of African Bluegrass, Cassia and Cinnamon leaf begin to come through, accompanied by sultry frankincense. The Guava is there in warm fruitiness too, giving it a yummy note that softens the spices….
As the scent settles into the drydown, you get the warmth of the Orumbiri resin and just the gentlest touch of Hyraceum to hold it all together….
It’s a very clever combination with no single note dominating the blend, and amazingly for such a complicated formulation, not a single jarring or clashing note from first whiff to drydown, which in a natural perfume is a real achievement.
Personally, on my skin it comes through more as “African Honey Spice Tea” than “African Dawn”….
I can imagine myself sitting on a rug sipping sweet, sweet tea full of african spices, watching the sun rising over the Serengeti national park…the scent of the grasses and flowers in the morning sunwafting around me….
yummy stuff this!
